A low-cost microchipping clinic for cats and dogs

November 7, 2008

Did you know that $35.00 can bring you peace of mind?

Date: Monday, November 17, 2008
Time: 9am to 2pm
Location: Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, 194 Route 10 West, East Hanover, NJ

Appointments are required – no walk-ins please!

Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter is hosting a low cost microchipping clinic for cats and dogs on Monday, November 17, 2008 from 9am to 2pm.

Mt. Pleasant is one of the few local organizations to offer safe and inexpensive microchipping. The microchip, which is approximately the size of a grain of rice, is injected quickly and painlessly between the animal’s shoulder blades.

Thousands of animals have been reunited with their owners thanks to the use of microchips.  This can be a life saving process; if an animal strays, the cat or dog can be easily identified by scanning the microchip, which will provide the owner’s contact information. It is much safer than a collar alone, since collars and tags can easily be lost when an animal is outdoors.

For appointments or more information please contact Abby at 973-386-0590 ext. 4 or email abby@njshelter.org.

S2335 Authorizes Seven Day a Week Hunting

November 5, 2008

S802/A1669 Authorizes Bow & Arrow Hunting on Sundays

November 5, 2008

Senate Bill No. 802 (and Assembly bill A1669) would authorize deer hunting with bow and arrow on Sundays during any bow and arrow hunting season for deer prescribed by the State Fish and Game Code, provided the hunting is on a State wildlife management area or on private property.  This bill also raises from $20 to $50 the penalty for a violation of the no-Sunday hunting prohibition.

Current law provides that there is a statutory prohibition against hunting on Sundays.  This bill would amend current law to authorize the hunting of deer with bow and arrow on Sundays on State wildlife management areas or on private property during any bow and arrow hunting season for deer prescribed by the State Fish and Game Code, provided the person hunting possesses a valid bow and arrow license, or a valid “All Around Sportsman License” if applicable, issued by the Division of Fish and Wildlife, and abides by all applicable provisions of the State Fish and Game Code.

Join us in Support of Hunting Free Sunday

November 5, 2008

Three Bills Jeopardize New Jersey’s Sunday hunting prohibition.  Assembly and senate bills S802 and A1669 lift the hunting prohibition for bow and arrow hunting only while Senate bill S2335 allows for both bow and firearm hunting on Sundays.

The AWFNJ has joined a coalition of other animal welfare and advocacy groups in seeking to preserve Sundays as a day for families to enjoy outdoors.  While the AWFNJ does not oppose hunting, hunters represent a small percent of the state’s population and they are already able to hunt six days a week for much of the year.  Living in The Garden State comes with the benefit of enjoying the outdoors; hiking, biking, bird watching on public lands as well as enjoying ones own property.

Please speak up and urge your legislators to oppose S802, A1669 and S2335!  Click here to find your legislator and let them know Sundays must remain hunting free.

S3298 Establish the Office of Animal Welfare as an Independent Department

November 5, 2008

The New Jersey Legislature has the opportunity to take action for companion animals with the introduction of A3298, a bill that would establish the Office of Animal Welfare as an independent department within the Department of Health and Senior Services.

Currently the department is located within the Division of Disease Control, a department that is important in managing health issues such as rabies but is less prepared to take enforcement actions on issues that affect the well-being of animals. Critically, this bill will not require any additional funding to accomplish its goal of providing autonomy for this department.

On October 16th the bill was introduced and has been referred to the Assembly Agricultural and Natural Resources Committee.

Take Action!
