Community Initiatives Director, NY/NJ

Job Summary:
The New York / New Jersey Community Initiatives Director provides guidance, resources, and support to animal shelters, rescue groups, animal control officers, associations and collaborative workgroups throughout New York / New Jersey and other assigned areas for the purpose of advancing animal welfare and increasing the Live-Release-Rate for homeless animals. This position has oversight for the distribution of grant funds in their region. Additionally, the Director will support other CI programs and initiatives, including work in the ASPCA Partnership initiative (AP) and will be responsible for applicable sections of the Strategic Plan for Department 38. The Director will also provide assistance in their areas of expertise when called on by other team members.
Job Responsibilities:
- Facilitate and manage grants within assigned region NY/NJ and Maryland.
- Actively participate in state organizations and may serve in position of Board member.
- Provide outreach via active participation and attendance at regional conferences and other events such as the New York State Humane Association’s Animal Protection Forum, New Jersey Federation Conference.
- Network with industry leaders to build relationships and stay abreast of the state of animal welfare in NY/NJ.
- Work collaboratively with the ASPCA Senior Director, Eastern Region Government Relations and the Director, Northeast Investigations & Response to coordinate needs and resources for constituents and colleagues.
- Assist animal protection organizations and others with resources and expertise. Attend, exhibit and actively participate in national, state and regional training conferences on behalf of CO and the ASPCA
- Design and deliver workshop curriculum and content that balances current animal welfare trends with needs of participants.
- Provide onsite consultation to animal shelters and rescue groups.
- Expertly understand, implement and communicate the ASPCA Partnership program philosophy and guidelines in relation to the ASPCA overall strategic plan.
- Responsible for applicable sections of the ASPCA Strategic Plan and for assisting in development of plan each year
- Support all other activities which will contribute to the advancement and success of CO and the ASPCA as identified by supervisor
Education:
- College degree preferred, high school diploma required
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years management experience with animal control, shelter operations, executive director or animal welfare programs and services experience required
- Demonstrated personal communication skills; good writing and editing skills, ability to express thoughts orally in a clear manner
- Valid driver’s license
Knowledge Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience with all phases and varieties of animal protection organizations and issues
- Some knowledge of fundraising, including board development
- Expert knowledge of project and program management
- Knowledge of strategic planning and implementation
- Knowledge of NY/NJ Animal Welfare issues and organizations
Skills Requirements:
- Must be self guided, highly organized, and have the ability to work independently with remote supervision
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build alliances with a wide variety of groups and individuals representing various perspectives in the field, Mediation and/or dispute resolution skills a plus
- Strong leadership and management skills with an ability to plan, organize, direct, motivate, involve, and coach
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, including teaching and public speaking
- Strong analytical skills and broad knowledge of field
- Ability to represent ASPCA philosophy and policy in all work areas
- Proficiency in budget development and management
- Word processing, basic database and internet research skills
Training Requirements:
- Will be required attend training in Dialogue Education and Sure Fire Meetings and Use of ASPCA Logic Model and Facilitated Leadership
- Will be required attend training in Intro to Appreciative Inquiry and Mediation
Additional Information:
- NY/NJ residents strongly preferred
- Valid driver’s license required
- Frequent travel required, must be flexible in work schedule; weekend and off-hours as required and be able to travel often
- Must be able to work in a remote office with minimal supervision
- Must occasionally lift and move up to 35 pounds
