Anne Trinkle, MBA
Upon graduating from Fairfield University with a B.S. in Marketing, Anne began a 15 year stretch in the corporate world, during which time she earned a Master’s Degree in Business at night at Fordham University. After a near death experience in 2001, Anne retired from work in transfusion medicine at Abbott Laboratories to devote herself full-time to animal rescue after years of part-time volunteering in the field of animal welfare. Shortly thereafter, she founded Animal Alliance.
Anne and her husband David live in New Jersey where they share their home with 10 treasured rescue dogs. They also host an ever changing lineup of foster dogs in the Animal Alliance kennel located on their property, and numerous feral cats relocated from various TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) colonies. Anne’s number one passion in life is increasing the availability of affordable, easily accessible spay/neuter for all pet owners. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, Anne is an 8+ year survivor. She is a devoted fitness enthusiast and yoga practitioner, and says that becoming a vegan in 2003 after years of being a vegetarian is the best move she ever made in her life, and the thing she is most proud of about herself.
St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center
Nora was born in the area and grew up familiar with St. Hubert’s since its Woodland Avenue site opened. As an adopter and frequent visitor to the animals awaiting adoption, she often fantasized about what it would be like to grow up and have a real job at a place whose mission was helping animals. She joined the organization—much smaller back then–in 1977 to take responsibility for the front office reception, dispatch and recordkeeping and tend to the majority of St. Hubert’s clerical duties, while at the same time working to grow St. Hubert’s fledgling humane education program. She was also responsible for the creation and implementation of the organization’s pet therapy and pet loss support programs. Nora managed the transition team when the merger with Somerset Humane Society resulted in the creation of St. Hubert’s satellite shelter facility in North Branch in 1994. She represents St. Hubert’s on the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey board. She feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on a myriad of projects and programs that have contributed to the organization’s growth and ability to be at the forefront of life-saving sheltering efforts and adoption initiatives. Nora shares her Morris Township home and heart with her loving family, which includes her dearly loved dogs and cats adopted from both the Madison and North Branch shelters.
Hudson County Animal League
Joan Mackiewicz, a retired Executive Assistant from J.P. Morgan Chase, became involved with animal welfare as a volunteer with the Hudson County Animal League. She also served as HCAL’s Board Secretary for a number of years.
Joan serves as the Deputy Director of the Hudson County Animal Response Team (CART). The Hudson CART is an all-volunteer group working under the direction of the Office of Emergency Management and in cooperation with the American Red Cross to implement a disaster plan for Hudson County’s animals. She was a member of the New Jersey CART Working Group. In 2013, the Working Group authored program documents designed to establish consistent CART activities across the state and to be in compliance with the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 and similar requirements under New Jersey law.
She has served as the AWFNJ Secretary from 2007 to the present.
Joan and her partner Tom reside in Toms River with their three dogs, two cats and two cockatiels.
Animal Welfare Association
Maya Richmond was Director of Operations and Program Development for the Maryland SPCA in Baltimore before coming to AWA. She enjoys designing innovative programs like, high-volume spay/neuter clinic, earned income ventures, staff development, building new spaces, and helping shelters develop sustainable programs and fundraising so they can will also be able to do more for the community’s needy pets. She shares her home with 2 cats, 2 dogs, an understanding husband, their young daughter and her elderly mother.
Beth Mersten Cruz
Beth Mersten Cruz is the founder and president of Shelter Showcase, and has served on the AWFNJ Board since 2007. Beth worked for Best Friends Animal Society for 7 years, where she organized the largest Best Friends Pet Super Adoption, and managed the No More Homeless Pets conference, Best Friends Network and the No More Homeless Pets outreach team, providing guidance on program development and animal welfare topics to grassroots organizations, humane societies, town officials and volunteers. Beth also founded a small consulting firm in 1998, which provided computer consulting and project management services for 8 years in the corporate world. Beth holds a Masters in Conservation Biology and a Bachelor’s in Biology, both from the University of Pennsylvania.
Sara Kent is the director of shelter outreach for Petfinder at Nestlé Purina PetCare. With a passion for pet adoption, she ensures that adoptable pets and animal welfare organizations are always seen in the best light. During her 13-year career with Petfinder, Sara has led the shelter outreach team in creating the largest online network of animal welfare organizations. She sets the strategy and direction for Petfinder to grow within the animal welfare industry. With a focus on customer service and free resources, she aims to provide a best-in-class experience to more than 14,000 Petfinder member organizations. Sara has authored numerous articles on pet parenting, customer service and marketing adoptable pets. She also contributes to the Petfinder and Petfinder Pro blogs and fields frequent media interviews and speaking engagements on topics involving animal welfare, pet adoption and pet parenting. She serves on the board of directors for the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey and the board of trustees for Tabby’s Place: A Cat Sanctuary. Sara lives in Montclair, NJ, with her husband, two dogs, three cats, a tarantula and a backyard community cat colony.

Fourteen years ago, Suzanne began her career in animal welfare as a volunteer cat socializer at her local municipal pound. That few hour a week volunteer effort eventually expanded into Board Presidency at Parsippany Animal Supporters Society (PASS), a rescue and shelter support organization. That lasted for 7 years in which time, Suzanne fostered countless kittens and did many large and small fundraisers. In 2010, she joined the staff of Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, where she currently serves as Executive Director. It is an incredibly rewarding job which has inspired her to continue to grow in the field. She has recently served as a Board of Health Vice President and member overseeing animal control and became an animal control officer. Suzanne currently shares her home with a number of charming felines.
Humane Society of the United States
Kathleen Schatzmann has been the New Jersey State Director for the Humane Society of the United States since 2010. She has worked to strengthen animal protection laws on the local and state level, initiated and cultivate relationships throughout the animal welfare community to work as a unified front, coordinated and presented grassroots and lobby 101 programs, engaged in hands on wildlife solutions, TNR, and animal cruelty cases.
Most recently Kathleen had assisted in disaster response during Super Storm Sandy. She has experience working with the Governor’s Office, Department of Agriculture, County Offices of Emergency Management, County Animal Response Teams, and Incident Command Centers. Kathleen worked with both national and local groups with direct animal care involving search and rescue, temporary sheltering, intake/release, veterinary care, enrichment and specialized in communication with the public and media.
Before becoming The HSUS’s New Jersey state director, Kathleen Schatzmann was the Director of Humane Education for the Monmouth County SPCA where she created an innovative new curriculum for grades K-12, higher-level learning, and adult seminars, which adhered to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, promoted character education, and offered service learning opportunities.
She is the former chair of the New Jersey-based Protecting Animal Welfare PAC, and currently sits on the Governor appointed Domestic Companion Animal Council, The Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey board, and the People for Animals Board.
Jill Van Tuyl has been in the nonprofit field for over 20 years in positions ranging from publicity director to vice president of operations to executive director. She became involved in animal welfare by trying to volunteer at a local shelter, where she instead was hired to develop the agency’s first volunteer program. She is certified as an animal control officer in New Jersey, and is also certified for National Wildfire Training, FEMA and Incident Command. Jill was a key presenter in a FEMA video for national firefighter training on animal behavior and rescue of animals in disasters. Jill has worked in limited admission facilities, government agencies, and medium and large open intake facilities.
Jill is home based in New Jersey and focuses mainly on New York and New Jersey in her role as Community Initiatives Director. She has a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from the University of Phoenix. Jill is hooked on shelties and currently has Lacey – who was a ‘foster failure’. She and her partner also have a cat named Zen that, of course, manages Lacey. In her spare time she loves hiking, all things zombie, reading, tennis, movies, attending hockey games, and going out to dinner.
